Beachfront Restaurants in Koh Samui: Dinner With Your Feet in the Sand

Beachfront restaurants in Koh Samui, beach by beach, from locals in Chaweng Noi. Which tables are really on the sand, which close at six, and where the sun sets.

Every resort on this island calls its restaurant beachfront. Some of them mean a table on the sand ten metres from the sea. Some mean a terrace with a view of the pool, which has a view of the sea. We live in Chaweng Noi and run a villa here, and this is the honest map of beachfront restaurants in Koh Samui, beach by beach: where the tables are actually on the sand, what they cook, and the opening hours that catch people out.

One thing first. If you want the island laid out under you from a cliff, that's a different dinner, and we covered it in restaurants with a view. This one is about sand.

Beachfront restaurants in Koh Samui: the short version

- Best sand-table dinner: Choeng Mon. Calm water, a fire show, tables on the beach. - Best for a lively night: Fisherman's Village in Bophut. - Best local seafood on the water: Sabienglae, just south of Lamai. - Best for an actual sunset: the north coast. Not Chaweng. We'll get to that. - Biggest trap: Lamai's beach places are lunch spots. Several close at six.

Chaweng: the busy one

Chaweng Beach has the most beachfront tables on the island and the least romance per square metre. That's fine. You came for choice.

Baitong, at Banana Fan Sea Resort, is our pick for Thai food on the water: crab curry noodles, a long seafood list, and a dining room on Chaweng Beach itself. Salt Society at Centara Reserve is the polished option, a beach bar and kitchen built around seafood, wine and cocktails, open from noon until 10:30pm Monday to Saturday, with split lunch and dinner hours on Sundays.

Then there's O.P. Beach Restaurant, which is the opposite of polished. One reviewer summed it up as tables on the beach in the shade of the trees, fair prices, and staff who are "not very cheerful". We've read worse reviews of better-looking places. Our best restaurants in Chaweng guide covers the rest of the strip, inland and off the beach.

Chaweng Noi: our bay, honestly

Seven minutes over the hill from Chaweng, and a different planet for dinner. Chaweng Noi's sand belongs mostly to resorts, so what you get is a beach bar or two fronting the hotels: a Thai plate, a cold beer, no restaurant strip. Lovely once. Pricey three times a day. We wrote the full, slightly embarrassing truth in our Chaweng Noi restaurant guide.

Lamai: lunch on the sand, not dinner

Here's the one that ruins evenings. Lamai's two best-known beach restaurants keep beach hours.

Baobab is French-Thai on Lamai Beach and is listed as open 8:30am to 6pm. No Stress (its listing shares a street number with Baobab's) does Thai and European food from 9am to 6pm, and its own page promises "feet in the sand, the sea in front of you". Both are great for a long lunch. Turn up at 7pm in a nice shirt and you'll be eating at the night market.

Which isn't a bad outcome, frankly. Lamai's restaurants do the evening shift inland.

Sabienglae: the one locals point to

Just south of Lamai Beach, Sabienglae is one of the island's best-known sit-down seafood restaurants, and the setting is a plain dining room right on the beach. It's open 10am to 10pm, and there's a second branch in Bang Rak. This is southern-Thai seafood, not a resort's idea of it. Go hungry, order the baked mussels with chilli and basil that reviewers keep mentioning, and see our Koh Samui seafood guide for what else is worth the money.

Choeng Mon: the best sand-table dinner

Choeng Mon is calm, curved and quiet, and it's where we send guests for the classic dinner on the sand.

The Blue Spice puts real restaurant tables directly in the sand, around ten metres from the water, with a covered terrace behind for the nervous. It's open 10am to 10pm, the kitchen closes at nine, and the fire show starts around 7:15pm. Pi Samui, the round building at the far end of the bay next to the Kirati hotel, sits right on the beach, opens 11am to 10pm, and runs fire shows on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 7:30pm.

The full picture, including the cheaper main-road kitchens behind the sand, is in our best restaurants in Choeng Mon.

Bophut and Fisherman's Village: the lively one

The north coast does beach dining with a pulse. Coco Tam's is the famous one: beanbags on the sand, cocktails, a nightly fire show, open from the afternoon until midnight. It's a beach bar that serves food, not a restaurant with a bar, and it knows it. On the same beach, The Club by Zazen is the grown-up table, Thai and European cooking on the Bophut beachfront, looking out across the bay to the neighbouring islands. And Guilty at Anantara Bophut does tacos and strong cocktails on Bophut Beach, which is a sentence we stand behind.

Our Fisherman's Village restaurants guide covers the dinner places on the lane behind the beach.

Maenam: the quiet one with the sunset

Maenam is the sleepiest beach town on the north coast, and its beach restaurants match. The Beach House at Santiburi is the resort option. Armando's Beach Restaurant gets glowing reviews for its view across to Koh Phangan, and one reviewer flags that it's closed on Mondays, which is the kind of detail you want before the drive, not after. Our Maenam restaurants guide has the cheaper places in the sois behind the beach.

The sunset problem

Chaweng and Chaweng Noi face east. That means sunrise, not sunset, and Baitong's "sunset views" are a sky going pink behind you. For the sun actually dropping into the water, eat in Maenam on the north coast or head west. Bophut gets the pink over the water. Our sunset spots guide has the exact places.

What a beachfront table costs

You pay for the sand. The same green curry costs noticeably more on the beach than at a market stall inland. The Blue Spice's own guide puts casual seafood on the sand at 200 to 400 baht per person with drinks, mid-range at 800 to 1,500 baht, and premium at 2,000 baht and up. That's a restaurant pricing its neighbours, so treat it as a rough guide. It matches what we see. For cheap and genuinely good food, the places locals eat inland are a different list entirely.
