How eating in Choeng Mon actually works

The Blue Spice is the anchor of the beachfront, with tables on the actual sand and a covered terrace behind them. It's Thai food with a fresh seafood lean, open 10am to 10pm with the kitchen closing at nine, happy hour from four to seven, live music from six and a fire show advertised nightly at 7:15. Prices sit mid-to-high for the island, which is the beachfront tax working as designed. Their own guide is at pains to say it's not a beach club, and that's accurate. It's dinner with your toes in the sand, not a party.

Pi Samui holds the far end of the bay, a circular building looking out at Koh Fan Yai, the bigger of Choeng Mon's two little islands. The Mother is the local benchmark: a family-run Thai and Western kitchen, traditionally decorated, doing a penang curry and a pad thai that do the talking. Cheap, good, no view, no regrets. A & B Restaurant, in the heart of the village strip, plays the same game with friendly staff and a fruit platter that appears on the house at the end. Krua Thai, up at the Pi Samui end of the road, is the seafood-special specialist. One visiting blogger went back twice in a six-night stay for the red snapper, which is the only restaurant review that ever means anything. And Nanyuan Noodle does a Peking duck, which is not a sentence anyone expects to write about a Samui beach village, but here we are.

The wildcard is The Jumping Bean, doing Texan barbecue, ribs and tacos, with board games and kids' activities laid on. If your table includes a nine-year-old who has announced they are done with rice, this is the escape hatch. SALA Samui Restaurant sits steps from the sand at the SALA resort and takes outside diners if you confirm ahead. Breakfast runs 6:30 to 11am, the all-day menu goes to 11pm, and from 6pm there's a four-course Southern Thai set that's the strongest argument. Kimpton Kitalay runs a pop-up beach barbecue on Wednesdays: unlimited salad and noodle bar, barbecue cooked to order, desserts and a fire show, from chefs with Michelin Guide credits. Choeng Mon's street food scene is small but committed. Vendors work the beach selling barbecued chicken, sweetcorn, pineapple and mango, so lunch can be a series of small decisions made lying down.
