Best Restaurants in Maenam, Koh Samui

The best restaurants in Maenam, Koh Samui, from a local who actually eats there. Roadside curry pots to the one Italian pizzeria worth the drive.

Maenam does not try to impress you. It is the quietest of the north-coast beach towns, and the restaurant scene matches the mood: fewer beach clubs, more roadside places with plastic chairs and a grandmother running the wok. If you are looking for the best restaurants in Maenam, Koh Samui, the honest answer is that the good stuff is not shouting from the main road. It is tucked into the sois behind it.

We are twenty-odd minutes away in Chaweng Noi, and we still drive out here on purpose. Here is where we send guests, and why.

Best restaurants in Maenam for real Thai food, no frills

Start with Poom's Place, on Phra Lan Road. It is unassuming from the outside, family-run by a Samui local, Khun Lek, and his wife, Aom, but the seafood is fished that morning and on your plate that night. Recommended order: Gai Pad Med Mamuang (chicken with cashews) or the Massaman curry. Fair prices, open every day from midday to half ten.

For something rougher round the edges, Ran Lan Saka is a proper side-of-the-road rice-and-curry spot. Point at the pots, get southern Thai curries like gaeng som and pla som tod, black-pepper-heavy gaeng gai baan on the side. One write-up's full order came to 225 baht. It opens early, roughly 7am to 2pm, so this is a lunch stop, not dinner.

Permpoon Thai Food is the third of this trio, a modest roadside place known for its noodle soup and a pad kra pao you can ask to have made "European spicy." None of these three are trying to be an occasion. That is the point.

Breakfast is Maenam's actual strength

If Maenam has a genuine specialty, it is the morning, and it holds its own against our island-wide breakfast list. About Cafe Koh Samui runs on an award-winning barista and good wholegrain bread, in a small space that fills up fast. A few doors down, Le Fournil is a proper French bakery. A Frenchman has been baking croissants and baguettes here since 2011, and yes, they cost more than a bowl of noodles, but they are the real thing.

Pancake Island does exactly what it says, stacked and loaded with berries and chocolate, plus smoothies and eggs on toast for anyone not in a pancake mood. And Monster Café leans into the family crowd: a playground out back, stuffed animals on the shelves, and a Dalgona coffee if you want the TikTok version of your caffeine.

Something that isn't Thai

Two places break the pattern on purpose. Two Sisters does a genuinely good vegan menu, a vegan burger, a chicken-and-avocado quesadilla, tabouleh made from scratch, for anyone who has hit their curry limit for the week (it earns its spot on our vegetarian restaurants guide too). And Pizzeria Da Bardo is run by a Tuscan who imports his own ingredients. A pizza runs roughly 350–550 baht, which is not cheap for Samui, but it is the one place in Maenam worth paying Italian prices for.

If you want a view with dinner

Maenam's higher-end options sit along the beach road and inside the resorts. TripAdvisor's own ratings put three names at the top: Treehouse Silent Beach Restaurant, The Beach House at Santiburi, and The Fish Restaurant, all rated in the high 4s. We have not eaten at all three ourselves, so take that as a starting point for booking a table with a view, not a verdict, and see our restaurants with a view guide for the island's other proper waterfront tables.

One we can vouch for directly: Toh Kin Kao, on the grounds of Maenam Resort, serves breakfast through dinner on a porch that looks straight over the water. Go for the ocean view and an iced coffee, not a fast meal.

When Maenam isn't enough

Some nights you want more choice than a sleepy beach town gives you, and that is fine. It is part of why we tell guests not to expect a big night out here. Bophut's Fisherman's Village is about a ten-minute drive and has its own Friday walking street stacked with food stalls, plus a much bigger year-round restaurant strip if you want options beyond what Maenam offers.

If you are staying with us in Chaweng Noi, Maenam is roughly 22 minutes by car, worth the drive for a change of pace, not somewhere you need every night.

Quick answers

What's the best restaurant in Maenam? There is no single best. Poom's Place for reliable Thai, Ran Lan Saka for cheap and authentic, Toh Kin Kao for the view. Pick based on what you want, not a ranking.

Is Maenam good for restaurants, or should I eat somewhere else? It is good for a quiet, unpretentious meal, not for variety. If you want more choice in one place, Fisherman's Village in Bophut is a short drive away.

Where do locals actually eat in Maenam? The roadside places without much signage. Ran Lan Saka and Permpoon Thai Food are exactly that kind of spot, cheap and unfussy, the same instinct behind our island-wide where locals eat guide.

Is there anywhere for breakfast in Maenam? Yes, this is Maenam's strongest category. About Cafe, Le Fournil, Pancake Island and Monster Café are all within a short walk of each other.
