Looking up things to do in Maenam, Koh Samui, brings back a strange mix: OTA listing pages, a golf course, and a travel blog cheerfully admitting "there isn't much to do here." We live on the other side of the island and send guests to Maenam all the time, so let us referee. The blog is half right. Maenam is the north coast's slow lane, and nobody should book it expecting a schedule. But "not much" still includes one of Samui's longest beaches, the island's most local market night, a hilltop temple, a championship golf course and the boats out to two other islands. That's a perfectly good week. It's just a quiet one.

The first thing to do in Maenam, Koh Samui: the beach

Translation: you can actually swim here at any hour, which is not true of every bay on this island. There is so much sand that it never feels crowded even when the resorts are full, and the palm grove behind the eastern stretch throws real shade.

The honest caveats: the sand runs coarser than the powder at Choeng Mon or Chaweng Noi, and this is the breezy side of the island. Thursday night is the event. Plan around it

Maenam does one big thing a week. The Maenam Walking Street takes over the old Chinatown soi by the pier every Thursday from 5pm to about 10pm: a couple of hundred metres of grills, stalls, live music and cocktail carts, at village volume, with a crowd that skews local. It's the single best thing to do in Maenam, Koh Samui, and it only exists one night a week, so time your stay to hit it. The other six evenings, the village goes back to pretending nothing happened.

Climb to Wat Phu Khao Noi, then find the other temples

Maenam's own temple, Wat Phu Khao Noi, is the hilltop one, and the reason to go is the view. Down in Ban Mae Nam village there's also an ornate Chinese temple, which makes more sense once you've walked the old wooden Chinese shophouses the Thursday market runs through. Play a round, of either kind of golf

Maenam is where Samui keeps its golf. The Santiburi course is a championship 18-hole layout a short drive inland from the beach, a hillside course with views over the gulf. It is the reason a certain kind of visitor lands at the airport, turns left, and never sees Chaweng at all.

The budget version is Samui Disc Golf, which is exactly what it sounds like: a casual course of baskets you throw frisbees at. TripAdvisor ranks it the number two attraction in Mae Nam, ahead of everything except the beach itself, with over a hundred reviews. Take that as the town's mission statement. The second-biggest attraction is throwing a frisbee at a basket, and everyone involved is having a lovely time.

Get on a boat

Maenam has a working pier, and boats run from this coast toward Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, so you can be on another island for lunch without crossing Samui first. The bigger day out is Ang Thong Marine Park, the protected archipelago that is the standard big day trip from this coast.

On the water itself, the north coast's breeze is the selling point rather than the problem: windsurfers favour this stretch precisely because the wind picks up here. Chase a waterfall, or just a bigger dinner

When the village's early bedtime gets to you, Bophut's Fisherman's Village is a 10-minute drive east for the north coast's best restaurant strip, and Chaweng is about 22 minutes away when you need the loud version of Samui. That's the real shape of a Maenam stay: quiet base, short raids.

What Maenam doesn't do

Nightlife. The restaurants and beach bars here mostly shut by ten or eleven, and the town is proud of it. There's no beach club, no bar strip, no 1am anything. If that sentence reads as a warning, stay east.
