Working out where to stay in Maenam, Koh Samui, comes with a small surprise: the booking sites list about two hundred places to stay under "Mae Nam," and nothing on page one explains how the town is actually laid out. TripAdvisor counts 206 properties. Booking.com counts 184. Every result for this search is a listing page or a general Koh Samui guide written by someone who drove through once.

We live on the other side of the island, in Chaweng Noi, and we send guests up to Maenam regularly. Here is the guide the OTAs never write: what the town is, which end of the beach to pick, and who should be here in the first place.

What Maenam actually is

Maenam is the quiet, local town on Samui's north coast, sitting between Bophut to the east and the fishing village of Bang Por to the west. Wikitravel puts the district at about 7.5 square kilometres and 13,000 residents, which makes it a real Thai town that happens to have tourists, not a resort strip that happens to have Thais.

The beach is one of the longest continuous stretches of sand on the island, with Koh Phangan sitting on the horizon across the water. The village behind it runs on old wooden Chinese shophouses, cafés and local restaurants, and it wakes up properly once a week for the Thursday walking street. Trailfinders sums the area up as "quiet, local and authentic," and files it under rest, relaxation and yoga. Northabroad is blunter: "there isn't much to do here." Both are correct. That's the product.

The east end, the west end, and why it matters

Maenam's one real decision is not which hotel. It's which end.

The eastern half holds the village, the walking street and most of the development. Stay here and you can walk to dinner, walk to the market, and walk home along the sand. It is as close as Maenam gets to lively, which is a low bar it has no interest in raising.

The western half is a different animal. Northabroad describes it as "a lot more secluded," with scattered resorts and restaurants and long runs of beach in between. Stay out west and you will have a long, uncrowded run of sand and absolutely nothing within strolling distance. People book the west end on purpose, then spend day two learning what "secluded" means at dinner time.

The accommodation spread covers the whole range, which is unusual for a town this sleepy. Backpacker bungalows and cheap local eateries share the town with top-end resorts, and several of the smarter places market themselves as adults only. TripAdvisor's best-value pick for Mae Nam is literally an adults-only resort and spa. Maenam even has its own golf course, which tells you exactly what pace this town runs at.

The water, honestly

The swimming here is genuinely good most of the year, and it gets deep quicker than the toddler-friendly bays, which real swimmers prefer. The honest caveat, which no listing page will give you: this is the breezy side of the island. Windsurfers favour Maenam because the wind and currents pick up on the north coast, so the water is not always as calm or as clear as the listing photos suggest. December through April is the calm, clear window. Outside it, expect the occasional choppy day and plan a massage instead.

How far from everything you'll be

The airport is about 15 minutes away on the same side of the island, which is why plenty of families land, turn left, and never see Chaweng at all. Bophut's Fisherman's Village is a 10-minute drive for a bigger dinner. Chaweng, the east coast and most of the island's noise are a proper cross-island drive, not a beach hop.

That distance is the price of the peace, and you should pay it knowingly. Restaurants and beach bars here mostly shut by ten or eleven. Where to stay in Maenam, Koh Samui: the short version

Stay at the east end, near the village, if you want dinner and the Thursday market on foot and a beach that still never feels crowded. Stay out west if the entire point of the trip is being left alone with a long, empty run of sand, and you're happy driving to everything else. Go budget near the village, go adults-only quiet further out, and know that both ends share the same beach and the same bedtime.

One honest footnote from a travelfish forum regular that matches what we see: the beach is long, the water calm, and the nightlife is "low key bungalow bars." Keep going west from here and you hit the stretch of coast Travelfish says belongs to the long-termers, expats and retirees. Maenam is the last proper town before that.
