Koh Samui 5 Day Itinerary: The Version That Doesn't Move Hotels
A local's honest Koh Samui 5 day itinerary. One base, two out-trips, and enough slack that you actually come home rested instead of needing a holiday from it.

Search "koh samui 5 day itinerary" and you'll find people checking into four different hotels in five nights, cramming in a jungle safari, a cooking class, and a cabaret show, then flying home needing a lie down. That's not a holiday. That's a scavenger hunt with a suitcase. Here's the version we actually give guests: one base, two real out-trips, and enough open afternoons that the island does some of the work for you.
Five days happens to be the sweet spot anyway. Long enough to do the two or three things worth doing and still have slow mornings, short enough that nobody's fighting for the last day of annual leave. We've said as much before, and five days is where that math lands best.
Day 1: land, unpack, do nothing
Don't book anything for day one. Flights land at odd hours, the drive from the airport takes longer than the map suggests, and the best use of your first evening is the pool, not a scooter. Check in, swim, eat something simple and close by. If you're staying our side of the island, that's dinner in Chaweng Noi rather than the twenty-minute taxi into town. Save the ambition for tomorrow.
One thing worth doing before bed: set an alarm for sunrise. Chaweng and Chaweng Noi both face east, so the sunrise, not the sunset, is the free show here. A coffee on the sand at six beats anything you'll pay for later in the week.
Day 2: the free rocks and a proper massage
Late morning, drive south to Hin Ta and Hin Yai, the grandfather and grandmother rocks just off Route 4169 below Lamai. Free, twenty minutes, and worth the giggle. Keep going into Lamai for lunch, then find a mat on the sand for an hour. A beach massage here runs about 300 baht, and an honest hour of it is the best use of a hot afternoon on the whole island.
Head back before dark. This is a half-day, not a full one. That's the point.
Day 3: the one boat day
Five days gets you exactly one full-day excursion, and it should be the boat trip. Pig Island leaves from Thong Krut Pier on the south coast, a ten-to-twenty-minute ride out, with snorkelling and swimming pigs depending which operator you book. It eats the whole day between the drive down, the boat, and the drive back, so don't stack anything else on top of it. Come home, shower off the salt, and let the villa do the rest of the evening.
Day 4: Big Buddha, then slow down
Late morning, the northeast peninsula for Big Buddha: a twelve-metre statue at Wat Phra Yai, free, a short flight of steps, cover your shoulders and knees. It's close to Bophut, so make an evening of it and swing by Fisherman's Village for dinner. If your dates happen to land on a Friday you also get the walking night market. If not, the restaurants are worth the trip on their own.
That's it for sightseeing. If you want a third out-trip you can find one, but by day four most guests want the villa more than the itinerary. This is where the three-day version and the five-day version genuinely diverge: three days you're picking one thing and going home wanting more. Five days, you've already got your one thing, and now you get to just be here.
Day 5: last swim, not last dash
No 6am checkout scramble. Sleep in, one more swim, breakfast on the terrace, and a lazy final morning before the airport run. This is the day the hotel-hopping itineraries don't have, because they're already packing for the next place. Base yourself in one spot and day five is yours.
If five days isn't quite right
Cut Big Buddha and the massage afternoon and you've basically got our three-day version. Add a day trip to the west coast for sunset, or a proper loop around the island's beaches, and you're closer to the seven-day itinerary, which is really the same trip with more slack built in.
Koh Samui 5 Day Itinerary: Quick Answers
Is 5 days in Koh Samui enough?
Yes, and it's arguably the best length. Enough time for one full boat day, one half-day out, and still two or three days with nothing scheduled. Less than that and you're rushing; a lot more and you start running out of things worth doing.
What should I do in Koh Samui for 5 days?
One boat trip (Pig Island is the easiest), one half-day of rocks and a massage, one half-day for Big Buddha and Fisherman's Village, and the rest left open for the beach and the pool. Don't try to fit in more than that.
How many days should I spend in Koh Samui?
Four to five is the sweet spot for most people. Three works if you're only after one thing. A week suits anyone who wants to properly explore, which we've mapped out separately.
Should I move hotels partway through?
No. Every blog itinerary that has you checking into three or four different places in five days is optimising for content, not your holiday. Pick one base, ideally somewhere quiet, and let the day trips come to you instead of the other way round.
Five days on Koh Samui doesn't need to look busy to have been worth it. Pick your one boat day, your one culture half-day, and leave the rest of the week open. That's not us being lazy about the itinerary. It's the whole point of coming somewhere quiet.
