Three days on this island is enough to see the good stuff and still lie by the pool for an hour a day, but only if you stop trying to see everything. Here's the version we'd actually send a friend on, written by people who live in Chaweng Noi and have watched a lot of exhausted guests limp home from over-ambitious day one.

Day 1: Land, settle, and stay on this side of the island

Your flight lands, the drive to wherever you're staying takes anywhere from ten minutes to forty depending on where that is, and you will not want to see a temple. Don't fight it. Day one is for unpacking, a swim, and getting your bearings on the east coast, which is where Chaweng, Chaweng Noi, and Lamai all sit within a short drive of each other.

If you're staying in Chaweng Noi, you're already on a sunrise beach with calm, swimmable water and none of Chaweng's noise. Use the afternoon for it. If you want to move, Coral Cove is a short drive south, a small horseshoe bay with genuinely good snorkeling and none of the crowd. Skip the boxing show and the cabaret everyone lists for "day one" energy. You just got off a plane.

Day 2: Pick ONE big thing, not three

This is where every other itinerary falls apart. They'll have you doing Na Muang Waterfall, the Big Buddha and Wat Plai Laem, and Hin Ta and Hin Yai in the same day. Those three sights sit in three different corners of the island. Chase all of them and you'll spend day two in the back of a taxi, not on the island.

Pick one, based on what you actually like:

- Want a swim in the jungle? Na Muang's lower waterfall is a short, flat walk from the car park, and the upper one is a real hike, closer to twenty or thirty minutes each way, with a proper rock pool at the end if you want to earn it. - Want the big, famous, tick-the-box sight? Wat Phra Yai (the Big Buddha, a 12-metre gold statue that's sat on its own causeway since 1972) and Wat Plai Laem next door take a couple of hours together, no hiking required. - Want the weird, funny local one? Hin Ta and Hin Yai are a short walk off the road south of Lamai, free to visit, and the reason your friends will actually remember this stop is the shape of the rocks, not the geology lecture.

Whichever you pick, you'll be back on the east coast by mid-afternoon. That's the whole point of choosing one.

Day 3: Slow morning, real food, home in time to pack

Save your last full day for the thing you'll actually miss when you're back at your desk: doing nothing next to warm water. Sleep past sunrise for once, or don't, since Chaweng Noi's east-facing bay means the sunrise is the one thing worth setting an alarm for here.

For dinner, if it lands on a Friday, Fisherman's Village in Bophut runs its walking street market from about 5 to 11pm, and it's worth the drive for the food stalls alone. Any other night, stay local. Chaweng Noi has its own quiet restaurant scene that doesn't need a market day to be worth it, and you won't be fighting traffic back from Bophut on your last night.
