Thong Krut Beach, Koh Samui: The Honest Guide

Thong Krut Beach is the one nobody puts on a "best beaches" list, and after visiting it we understand exactly why. It's also one of the only places on this island where you'll watch actual fishermen do actual fishing, which counts for something in a place that's mostly given itself over to sun loungers. Here's what it is, what it isn't, and why you'll probably end up there anyway.

Where Thong Krut Beach, Koh Samui, actually sits

Thong Krut sits on Koh Samui's south coast, in the Taling Ngam district, roughly a mile of shoreline along Route 4170, between Thong Tanod Beach and Bang Kao Beach. It's the furthest corner of the island from Chaweng, and it feels like it. This is the quiet, working end of Samui. A small fishing village with a working pier, not a resort strip.

Can you actually swim there?

Short answer: not really, and we'd rather tell you that upfront than let you find out with your shoes on. The water is shallow for a long way out, the seabed is coarse sand mixed with pebbles and coral, and at low tide a lot of it is simply exposed. It's not the kind of shallow that's good for kids paddling. It's the kind that leaves you picking your way over stones. The west end of the bay does have a softer sand pocket, fronting a handful of villas and restaurants, and that's the closest thing to a proper beach moment you'll get here. If a real swim is the actual goal, Silver Beach or Coral Cove up the coast will treat you far better.

The fishing village is the point

What Thong Krut has instead of great sand is character. Colourful wooden longtail boats sit at anchor along the shore, and the whole place runs at the unhurried pace of somewhere that was never built for tourists in the first place. It's one of the most underdeveloped stretches of coastline on Samui, which sounds like a knock and isn't. There's no beach club soundtrack here, just a working fishing village that happens to sit on the water.

Seafood restaurants line the shore, several with proper sea views, and they run on what came off the boats that morning. Turn up around lunch for the best of the catch, before the day's takings are down to whatever nobody wanted.

The pier is why you're actually here

Thong Krut Pier is the real reason this place shows up in anyone's plans, ours included. It's the departure point for boat trips out to Koh Tan for snorkelling, and to Koh Madsum, better known as Pig Island, a 10 to 20 minute ride depending on the boat. If you've booked a Pig Island trip out of Samui, there's a good chance you're standing on this exact pier at some point, whether you clock the village around you or not.

You can also skip the packaged tour entirely and negotiate directly with an independent longtail boatman at the pier, though you'll want to agree the price before you climb in, same rule as every other boat and songthaew on this island. It's cheaper and more flexible, and you lose the bundled snorkel gear and lunch that a booked tour throws in.

Worth the drive down?

On its own, no. Nobody should make the trip from Chaweng Noi purely to stand on Thong Krut sand. But paired with a boat day, which most visitors are doing anyway, it's worth the extra half hour to actually look at the village instead of speed-walking from car park to pier and back. Grab lunch at one of the sea-view seafood spots before or after your boat, and you've turned a transit stop into an actual outing.

If you want a temple stop while you're down this end of the island, Laem Sor Pagoda sits a short drive further along the same coast road, on the quiet southwest tip, well away from anything resembling a crowd.
