It's a quiet stretch of the south coast built around granite boulders and a coral-strewn seabed, not soft powder sand and a swim-up bar. If that sounds like a downgrade, keep reading, because for the right person it's the opposite.

Where Laem Set Beach, Koh Samui, actually sits

Laem Set sits on Koh Samui's south coast, beginning near the Ban Thale river, the natural line that separates it from Bang Kao Beach next door. It's the same quiet stretch of coast road as Thong Krut, the working fishing village further west, and it keeps that same unhurried, undeveloped character. Figure on roughly 30 minutes by road from Chaweng and about 20 minutes from Lamai. You're looking at a scooter, a car, or a taxi, and if it's a taxi, agree the fare before you get in.

Can you actually swim there?

Not comfortably, and we'd rather say so than let the villa-brochure photos oversell it. The water is shallow for a long way out, the seabed is coral and rock rather than clean sand, and at low tide a good stretch of it is simply exposed, leaving sandbars and tide pools where the sea used to be. It's the kind of shallow that rewards a pair of water shoes and low expectations for an actual swim. If a real swim is the goal, Silver Beach or Coral Cove up the coast will do a far better job of it.

What Laem Set is actually good for

What it lacks in swimmable sand, it makes up for in the boulders. Huge granite formations run along this stretch of coast, the same granite that shows up on the beaches further north, and they're genuinely good for scrambling and exploring rather than just lying next to. Low tide is the better time to walk it; that's when the tide pools and sandbars are at their most interesting, and the crowds, such as they are anywhere else on Samui, simply don't exist here. This is one of the quietest corners of the island, a handful of villas and boutique resorts and not much else, which is exactly the draw for anyone who's already had enough of Chaweng.

Worth combining with a temple stop

If you're already down this end of the island, it's worth pairing the beach with two nearby stops rather than treating it as a destination on its own. Laem Sor Pagoda, a golden temple sitting right on the water, is a short drive further along the same coast road. So is Wat Khunaram, home to Koh Samui's mummified monk, still seated in a display case in full robes and sunglasses decades after his death, one of the island's genuinely odd, genuinely worth-seeing stops. Is it worth the trip?

On its own, no. You're not driving 30 minutes from Chaweng Noi purely to stand on a coral beach you can't really swim off. But as a stop on a day that already includes Thong Krut, Laem Sor Pagoda, or the mummified monk, it earns its place. Bring shoes you don't mind getting wet, go at low tide if you want the boulders and tide pools at their best, and don't expect a restaurant scene beyond whatever the local villas and resorts are running that day.

Wake up on a calm sunrise beach, spend an afternoon picking your way over granite boulders on a coastline that's barely been touched. For all the different things this island can be in one day, that's a decent pair of them.
