Maenam Viewpoint, Koh Samui: The North Coast's Free Roadside Lookout

Maenam Viewpoint, Koh Samui: where it actually is off Route 4169, why there's no fee or climb, and when to go for the view without the tour-van crowd.

May · September 28, 2026

Warm golden-hour view of a calm turquoise bay and green headland on Koh Samui's north coast, seen through palm fronds from a hillside lookout

Maenam Viewpoint, Koh Samui's roadside lookout on the north coast, gets a paragraph in every "hidden gems" listicle and almost no useful detail in any of them. No one tells you which road it's actually off, whether you need to climb anything, or what time to turn up so you're not sharing the railing with a tour van. We live twenty minutes away, over the hill in Chaweng Noi. Here's the actual version.

Where it is, and how you get there

The viewpoint sits just off Route 4169, the ring road that circles the island, on the northwest stretch above Maenam. From Chaweng it's roughly 15 to 20 minutes by car or rented motorbike, the same road you'd take to reach the north coast towns generally. If you're not driving, a songthaew from Chaweng or Lamai runs somewhere between 50 and 100 baht, and you'll walk or grab a short local taxi the last five to ten minutes from the drop-off.

There's a small parking area near the entrance, and nothing beyond that: no ticket booth, no gate, no queue system. You park, you walk a short distance, you're looking at the coast. It's built for exactly the kind of five-minute stop that fits on the way to or from Maenam itself, not a destination you plan a whole afternoon around. There's also a marked trail up to it from TUI Blue The Passage Samui, if you'd rather walk it from that end of the resort strip than drive.

What you're actually looking at, and what it costs

Nothing, is the answer to cost. No entry fee, no donation box, no "suggested contribution" that somehow isn't optional. From the top you get the north coast laid out below: the curve of the shoreline, the green hills behind it, and open water reaching out toward the Gulf of Thailand. It's not a dramatic clifftop drop like Lad Koh further round the coast. It's a wide, settled view, which suits the north side of the island generally. Maenam has always been the slow lane, and its viewpoint looks the part.

When to actually go

Two answers, depending on what you want. Go early, before the day's driving loops start, and you get the platform close to yourself with clean morning light. Go in the evening and you get a proper wind-down: the water catches the colour as the light drops, and it's a genuinely nice, cheap way to close a day on the north coast without the drive out to Lipa Noi or Taling Ngam on the far side of the island. It won't out-do the west coast for a full sun-into-the-sea shot, but for a five-minute stop on your way back to wherever you're staying, it does the job properly.

Middle of the day, skip it. Flat light, hot tarmac, nothing to see that the morning or evening doesn't do better for free.

Maenam Viewpoint vs Lad Koh: not really a contest

People occasionally ask which viewpoint to do if they've only got time for one. Lad Koh, on the ring road between Chaweng and Lamai, is a clifftop pull-off on the east coast built for sunrise, with the platform and railing you see in every tour-van photo. Maenam Viewpoint is on the opposite side of the island, a quieter, wider view that leans toward evening rather than morning. Both are free, both take five minutes, and neither needs a booking.

The honest answer is they're not really substitutes. Lad Koh is the one you do on a Chaweng-to-Lamai drive because it's directly on the road. Maenam Viewpoint is the one you do because you're already up on the north coast for the beach, the market or the golf, and it's a shame to skip a free view that's right there. Nobody drives across the island for either one on its own.

What's nearby

It's on the same north coast as Maenam village and its Thursday-night walking street, so a sensible loop is: viewpoint in the late afternoon, dinner and the market in the village after, if your visit lines up with a Thursday. If you want the fuller rundown of what else the north coast offers beyond the view, our things to do in Maenam guide covers the beach, the market and the golf course in one place.

Quick answers

Is there an entry fee for Maenam Viewpoint?

No. It's a free roadside lookout with a small parking area. Anyone charging you for "tickets" is charging for transport, not the view itself.

Do I need to hike or climb to get there?

No real climb. It's a short walk from the parking area to the lookout, nothing that needs proper shoes or planning.

How do I get there without a car?

A songthaew from Chaweng or Lamai runs roughly 50 to 100 baht, followed by a short walk or local taxi for the last stretch. Driving yourself on Route 4169 takes about 15 to 20 minutes from Chaweng.

Is it good for sunset?

It's a solid, low-key option on the north coast for evening colour over the water, though the west coast around Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam is still the real sunset destination if that's the whole point of your trip.

What else is nearby?

Maenam village, its beach, and the Thursday walking street are all close by, covered in our full Maenam guide.

If you're staying with us in Chaweng Noi, Maenam Viewpoint isn't a special trip, it's a stop you fold into a north-coast loop when you're already headed that way. That's the appeal: no fee, no plan required, a proper view for the cost of the drive.
