Koh Samui shopping is not a destination sport. Nobody flies here to shop the way they'd fly to Bangkok for Chatuchak Weekend Market. What the island has instead is one proper mall, a handful of night markets that double as an evening out, and a few honest crafts worth the suitcase space. Here's what's actually here, not the padded top-ten list every hotel blog runs.

Central Festival Samui: the one real mall

If you want air conditioning, international brands and a supermarket under one roof, Central Festival Samui is it, and it's the only thing on the island that qualifies as an actual shopping mall. It sits on Chaweng Beach Road, opened back in 2014, and runs three storeys of clothing chains, electronics, a food court, cafés and a supermarket stocked with imported groceries you won't find in a village shop. It's also the practical stop for anything you forgot to pack: a phone charger, sunscreen, a swimsuit that isn't a resort markup. If plain groceries or a bigger supermarket run is the goal rather than browsing, Chaweng also has the island's Tesco Lotus and Big C, both a short drive from the mall.

The night markets: shopping that's also the evening out

This is where Koh Samui shopping is genuinely worth your time, because the market doubles as a proper night out, not a chore.

Fisherman's Village Walking Street in Bophut is the one to build an evening around. It runs every Friday from about 5pm to 11pm, Beach Road closes to traffic, and the old wooden shophouses turn into stalls selling handmade jewellery, sarongs, home décor and street food alongside the browsing. It's the most atmospheric of the island's markets by a clear margin, old shophouse lane rather than a car park with tables in it.

Lamai runs its own version on Sundays, from around 5pm to 11pm, with stalls for handicrafts, clothing and street food alongside Lamai's regular daily food market. It's a smaller, more local crowd than Fisherman's Village.

Chaweng runs its own night market most weeks too, set back from the main bar strip, selling food and souvenirs rather than drinks. Which nights it actually runs shifts depending who you ask, so we won't pretend to hand you a fixed schedule. Treat it as a bonus if you're already in Chaweng after dinner, not a special trip, and browsing costs nothing either way, which makes it a natural add to a free afternoon on the island.

Laem Din Market: where the actual shopping happens

For produce, fresh seafood and the kind of stalls locals shop rather than browse, Talad Laem Din in Chaweng is the real thing, a five-minute walk back from the beach road. It runs as a working day market and turns into a food-focused night market in the late afternoon. You won't find souvenirs here so much as the actual island economy, which is exactly why it's worth a look even if you're not buying anything.

Nathon: the old town, if you want it quiet

Nathon, the island's old port town on the west coast, has a proper Chinatown-style shopping street running back from the ferry pier, old shophouses and general stores rather than tourist stalls. It's the least touristy shopping you'll find on Samui, in the same spirit as the island's other under-the-radar corners, mostly because almost nobody visiting the east coast bothers to drive over.

What's actually worth buying

Skip the printed keyrings on the beach road and look for cold-pressed coconut oil, hand-carved soap, woven pandan baskets and fans, hand-dyed sarongs and Thai fisherman pants, the same small-workshop crafts that show up across the island's markets and boutiques. Thai tailoring is genuinely good value if you're after a made-to-measure shirt or dress, and several shops on Chaweng Beach Road can turn an order around in as little as 24 hours, though get any quote and delivery date in writing before you commit.
