Koh Samui or Phuket? An Honest Answer from Someone Who Picked

Everyone asks us this once they find out we run a villa here: Koh Samui or Phuket? We're obviously not neutral. We packed up and moved to Chaweng Noi, not Patong. But we've been to Phuket plenty, we know people who swear by it, and the honest answer isn't "ours is better." It's that they're two different holidays wearing the same "Thai island" label, and one of them fits you better depending on what you actually want to do all day.

The size difference changes everything else

Phuket is 540 square kilometres. Koh Samui is 228.7, less than half. That single number explains most of the rest of this article. Phuket has room for a proper airport with long-haul carriers, a mainland-style bus network, and enough sprawl that Patong and Kata can feel like different towns. Samui is small enough that you can be at the opposite beach in under an hour and everything, including the airport, feels close.

The beaches: busier and bigger vs. calmer and smaller

Phuket's beaches (Patong, Karon, Kamala, Kata) are longer and back onto more built-up strips, high-rise hotels included. Samui's zoning keeps things lower: close to the beach, buildings are capped at a single floor and 6 metres, roof included. That's why our own coastline, from Chaweng Noi down to Lamai, still looks like palm trees and sand rather than a hotel wall. If you want a beach with more energy and more built-up choice right behind it, Phuket delivers that. If you want the beach to still look like a beach, Samui does.

Nightlife: Patong vs. Chaweng

Phuket's Patong is the bigger, louder, more concentrated party strip in Thailand, full stop. Samui's answer is Chaweng, which is genuinely lively but smaller in scale, and it's a scooter ride from the quiet we actually sell. Samui has one extra card to play here: a short boat ride gets you to Koh Phangan for the Full Moon Party, entry around 200 baht, so you can have the big night without living next to it. Phuket doesn't have that option; Patong is the whole party, on your doorstep, every night.

Getting there and getting around

Phuket has direct international flights, big carriers included, and a real airport bus system once you land, roughly 100 baht a ride. Samui's airport is smaller: fewer routes, and you're more often connecting through Bangkok or Surat Thani than flying in on a long-haul jet. Once you're on the ground, Samui runs on scooters and unmetered taxis, so agree the fare before you get in, every time, both ways. If door-to-door convenience from your home airport matters more to you than the destination itself, that's a real point in Phuket's favour.

What it actually costs

We won't pretend we've run a spreadsheet on this. You'll find write-ups claiming Samui's hotels average cheaper than Phuket's, and others calling Phuket the better overall value. Both are out there, and we're not going to pick a winner we can't back up. What we will say from living here: food and transport tend to run cheaper in Phuket, where more competition and easier road access keep prices down, while a private villa on Samui can undercut a big Phuket resort strip on a like-for-like beachfront stay. Book on the island you want to wake up on, not on which blog post you read last.

Weather and when to go

The two islands run different calendars. Phuket's wet season is roughly May to October, worst in September and October. Samui flips the script: its wettest stretch runs October to December, with July and August often its driest, calmest weeks, right when much of Thailand is in its rainy season. Plan around whichever island you pick, not the other one's forecast; we've seen people bring a Phuket packing list to a Samui trip and get it backwards.

So, Koh Samui or Phuket? Our actual answer

Pick Phuket if you want variety on tap: direct flights, a real bus network, beach towns with different personalities within a short drive of each other, and nightlife that doesn't need a boat. Pick Koh Samui if you want a smaller island that's easier to get your head around in a week, beaches that still feel like beaches, and a party you can visit on Koh Phangan and then leave. We think a week here gives you everything a good island holiday should, and once you've made the call, working out how long to actually spend is the next honest question to answer.

Depends what "better" means to you. Phuket wins on variety, direct flights, and nightlife density. Samui wins on being smaller, calmer, and easier to switch off in. Neither one is objectively better; they suit different holidays.

Is Koh Samui cheaper than Phuket?

Genuinely contested. Some comparisons put Samui's hotels cheaper on average, others call Phuket better overall value, especially for food and transport thanks to more competition. Don't decide on price alone; the two islands aren't different enough in cost to make that the deciding factor.

Which is best, Phuket, Krabi or Koh Samui?

That's really a third, separate question, since Krabi is mainland-adjacent limestone-cliff country, not another island in the same mould as Samui or Phuket. If you want the short version: Samui and Phuket are the easier, more developed picks; Krabi is the one for dramatic scenery and more legwork to get around.

What is the nicest island in Thailand?
