Koh Samui or Koh Lanta: The Honest Answer

Koh Samui or Koh Lanta is one of the few island comparisons where the answer is usually a date, not a preference. We live on Samui, in Chaweng Noi, so read the bias in. But these two islands sit on opposite coasts of Thailand with opposite weather calendars, and that fact settles more arguments than any beach photo will.

They are on opposite sides of the country

Samui sits in the Gulf of Thailand, off the east coast. Koh Lanta sits in the Andaman Sea, in Krabi province, off the west. They are not neighbours and they are not alternatives in the way people assume.

The consequence is seasonal, and it is sharp. Every one of Lanta's beaches faces west, and the island's high season runs from 1 November to 30 April, when the wind comes from the north-east and the sea is calm enough to swim, according to the island's own long-running seasonal guide. From May to October the wind swings south-westerly, the beaches collect what the ocean throws at them, and the same source puts business closures at roughly 80 per cent.

Samui runs late by comparison. Trailfinders' month-by-month breakdown puts the best stretch at January to March, with February the standout, calls May to August hot and above 32°C with short scattered rain, and marks October to December as the wettest period with the roughest seas. November is the month that reliably ruins plans here.

So the calendars are close to inverted at exactly the point people book. October to December, when Samui is at its soggiest, is when Lanta is switching back on. May to September, when most of Samui is perfectly fine and slightly sweaty, is when most of Lanta is shuttered.

Getting there is the other real difference

Samui has its own airport. Lanta does not have one at all.

To reach Lanta you fly into Krabi International on the mainland, then keep travelling. A public minivan from the airport takes three to four hours, and Dive and Relax, a Lanta-based operator, notes that the last minivan out of Krabi Town normally leaves at 4pm. A private transfer runs around 2,500 to 2,800 baht. A bridge connects Koh Lanta Noi to Koh Lanta Yai, and a car ferry links Koh Lanta Noi to the mainland at Koh Klang, running 5am to midnight daily.

A second bridge, straight from Koh Lanta Noi to the Krabi mainland, started construction at the end of 2023 and was supposedly due by the end of 2025. Local reporting from Lanta expects that date to slip, and says the finished bridge should cut the airport-to-hotel run to about an hour to 90 minutes. Until then, arriving is a half-day project.

Doing both is possible. Bangkok Airways flies Samui to Krabi direct, about an hour, and Lanta sources say you can leave Samui in the morning and be on a Lanta beach for sunset. What each island is actually like

Fodor's community puts it bluntly: Koh Lanta is anything but remote. It is quiet, not undiscovered. Guides that cover both land on the same split. Lanta is the laid-back one, long quiet beaches and family-run bungalows, with nightlife described as very low key. Samui is the polished one, with resorts, spas and everything on tap.

That is fair, and it is the whole trade. Samui is a developed island and looks like one. There are traffic, restaurants in every direction, hospitals, supermarkets, a real choice of food after 9pm, and Chaweng and Lamai doing the busy thing at full volume. Lanta has one hospital plus medical centres in Saladan, Long Beach and Khlong Nin, and that is the size of it.

The mistake is assuming Samui is only its loud parts. Ours is a bay on the same island with none of that, seven minutes over the hill from the noise, which is exactly the argument in Chaweng versus Chaweng Noi. Lanta's quiet is the whole island's default. Samui's quiet is a choice you make when you pick where to stay.

Koh Samui or Koh Lanta: who each one suits

Go to Lanta if you are travelling between November and April, you want the day to be slow on purpose, and a four-hour transfer from a mainland airport reads as part of the holiday rather than a tax on it. Slow travellers, couples and families who want a long flat beach and nothing scheduled get exactly what they came for.

Stay on Samui if you are flying in from outside Thailand and want to be swimming the same afternoon, if you are travelling May to September, if you want a villa with a pool and a real dinner choice, or if you are building a trip where the island is the base rather than the pilgrimage.

Our honest take

If you are coming in November, we would send you to Lanta and mean it. That is our worst month and their first good one, and no villa is worth a week of rough sea and rain.

Any other time, Samui wins on the boring things that decide holidays: you land on it, you are at the beach in half an hour, dinner exists, and you can be quiet without the entire island having to be quiet with you.

Is Koh Samui or Koh Lanta better?

Neither, in the abstract. Check your dates first. Lanta's season runs 1 November to 30 April, and roughly 80 per cent of the island closes May to October. Samui is at its best January to March and its worst October to December. November or December, take Lanta. May to September, take Samui.

Is it worth going to Koh Lanta?

In season, yes, if the point of the trip is slowing down. In low season most of it is closed and the sea is not reliably swimmable, which is a different and much worse holiday on the same island.

Does Koh Lanta have an airport?

No. The nearest airport is Krabi International on the mainland. From there it is three to four hours by public minivan, or around 2,500 to 2,800 baht for a private transfer, using the car ferry to Koh Lanta Noi and the bridge across to Koh Lanta Yai.

How do you get from Koh Samui to Koh Lanta?
